What is the most recent item that you have added to your workspace and why did you add it?
I recently added Oakywood's desk mounted speaker stands which allows me to place my studio monitors in the most optimal position by directing the sound towards my ears and reduce unwanted resonance and vibrations from travelling into the desk. Not only do they improve audio clarity, but also give me more usable desk space and contribute to a clutter free setup - it's amazing how small optimisations like this can go a long way to making my desk a more enjoyable place to get work done.
How did you decide on the layout of your workspace, and how does your furniture support that flow?
I've always positioned my desk adjacent to the room's main window, to enjoy the benefits of natural light in my workspace. It's easy to overlook, but lighting plays a fundamental role in how a space looks and feels, and even influences your mood and well-being. Sometimes this has meant building my desk setup in narrower parts of the room, but Oakywood has a really helpful online configurator which makes it easy to create your perfect desk by choosing everything from the finish, dimensions and any custom options like grommets or casters, before letting you to preview your design to check everything fits in your space using the AR camera, it's super cool.
How has using a standing desk changed your work habits, focus, or energy levels?
We literally spend thousands of hours at our desks every year, so it makes sense to invest in quality ergonomic solutions when designing a workspace. Get your seating right is obviously super important, but we also need to get up and move around a bit too, so I’ve been using a standing desk for the last few years to help with this. I've found that periodically standing throughout my workday helps reduce fatigue, boost concentration and helps me stay my most productive.
What advice would you give someone building their first standing desk setup at home?
I know it’s really tempting to buy a cheaper option from a well known meatball brand but after years of using laminate worktops attached to various drawers and cheap motorized legs, I can honestly say that investing in a high performance desk is the way to go. Paying extra for premium materials and quality craftsmanship will make a huge difference to your overall comfort and quality of life.
What makes a great home office setup?
When designing a workspace, I think it’s really important to surround yourself with things that represent your unique personality and celebrates your interests. Adding photos, posters, anything that represents your individual interests and personality will make your office an exciting and enjoyable place to get work done. Mindset is one of the biggest factors when it comes to overall performance, so creating a space that helps you feel more optimistic, engaged and creative is probably the most valuable upgrade I can offer.
